Hi everyone, and welcome to my first ever blog post! Here I will be chatting about ideas that have come up in your lessons and exploring issues that are prominent in the news. This week I have been thinking about gender. Any day now, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be welcoming a new baby into the Royal Family. For the first time ever, the child will one day be the monarch, regardless of whether it is a girl or a boy. I think this change to the law of accession is really exciting. I am often struck by the fact that some of our strongest monarchs have been women, and women who have become Queen really when they would not have expected it. Just look at the Elizabeths and Queen Victoria. Also, on the subject of gender, I have been following Wimbledon this week with interest. Players in both the women and mens' game now receive the same earnings for playing. Now, matches in the mens' game will last for a minimum of 3 sets and up to 5. The women will play only 2, or at most, 3. Is this equality in action or should men receive more simply for the extra hours spent on court? What do you think?
